Trezor.io/Start® | Trezor Suite App (Official) | Trezor®

Welcome to Trezor
Your Setup Starts Here.

You've made the right choice for securing your cryptocurrency. This official Trezor.io/Start guide will walk you through setting up your new Trezor hardware wallet with the official Trezor Suite app.

Preparation

Before You Start: A Quick Security Check

Your security is our highest priority. Before you plug in your device, please take 30 seconds to perform these critical checks.

  • Check the Tamper-Evident Seal: Your Trezor device comes in a securely sealed package. For the Trezor Safe 3 and Model One, check the holographic seals. For the Model T, check the magnetic dock seal. If this seal is broken, missing, or appears tampered with, DO NOT USE THE DEVICE. Contact our support team immediately.

  • Gather Your Materials: Have your new Trezor device, the included USB cable, your recovery seed cards, and a reliable pen ready. Ensure you are in a private, quiet location where you will not be disturbed for the next 10-15 minutes.

  • Prepare for 100% Offline Backup: Your recovery seed is the *only* backup of your crypto. This backup must *never* touch the internet. Do not use a password manager, do not type it into a file, and do not take a photo of it. You will write it down on paper only.

The Official Trezor Setup Guide

Follow these steps precisely to ensure your hardware wallet is set up securely with the official Trezor Suite app.

1

Download the Official Trezor Suite App

The Trezor Suite app is your secure window into your crypto portfolio. It's crucial to download it *only* from the official source to avoid phishing and malware.

  • Go to: trezor.io/suite
  • Verify the URL: Ensure your browser shows "https" and the lock icon, and that the domain is exactly `trezor.io`.
  • Download & Install: Choose the correct version for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux) and install the application.

Security Tip: You can also use the Trezor Suite for web at suite.trezor.io. This version runs in your browser and is ideal for users who prefer not to install desktop software. Both are equally secure.

2

Connect Your Trezor & Install Firmware

Open the Trezor Suite app. It will prompt you to connect your device. Use the provided USB cable to connect your Trezor to your computer.

Trezor devices are shipped without firmware installed as a security measure. The Trezor Suite app will automatically detect this and guide you to install the latest official firmware. This ensures your device is 100% genuine and has the most up-to-date security patches. Follow the on-screen instructions and confirm the installation on your device.

3

Create a New Wallet

Once the firmware is installed, Trezor Suite will give you two options: "Create new wallet" or "Recover wallet". Since this is your first time, you will select "Create new wallet".

The app will then guide you to begin the backup process. This is the most important part of the entire setup.

4

CRITICAL: Back Up Your Recovery Seed

Your Trezor will now generate your recovery seed (a list of 12 or 24 words). This seed is the master key to all your cryptocurrency. Anyone who has these words can steal your funds, from anywhere in the world.

Your device will display the words one by one. Write each word down, clearly and in the correct order, on the paper recovery seed cards.

Your Security Depends on This:
  • NEVER type your recovery seed into your computer.
  • NEVER take a photo of your recovery seed.
  • NEVER store it in a password manager, text file, or email.
  • NEVER share it with anyone, including Trezor Support. We will *never* ask for it.

After you have written all the words down, Trezor Suite will ask you to confirm a few of the words. This verifies you have backed them up correctly. Store your paper recovery cards in a safe, private, and durable location (e.g., a fireproof safe).

5

Set a Strong PIN

Next, you will set a PIN for your device. This PIN protects your Trezor from unauthorized physical access. Anyone who steals your device would need this PIN to use it.

The PIN entry on your computer will be "blind" (a 3x3 grid). The actual numbers corresponding to the grid will be displayed on your Trezor's screen. This prevents keyloggers or malware on your computer from capturing your PIN.

Choose a strong, non-obvious PIN (4-9 digits). Avoid "1234", "1111", or your birthdate.

6

Name Your Device & Finish

As a final step, you can give your Trezor a custom name. This helps you easily identify your device in Trezor Suite if you ever use more than one.

Congratulations! Your Trezor is set up and ready to secure your assets. You can now proceed into the Trezor Suite app, create your first accounts (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum), and start your self-custody journey.

Security is a Process, Not a Product

Your Trezor is the most secure way to store crypto, but your habits are just as important. Follow these security best practices.

Rule #1: The Recovery Seed is Everything

We cannot repeat this enough. Your Trezor device is replaceable; your recovery seed is not. If your device is lost, stolen, or broken, your recovery seed is the *only* way to get your funds back. If someone else gets your seed, your funds are gone forever. Protect it as you would protect your entire life savings.

Rule #2: Beware of Phishing & Scams

Scammers will try to trick you into revealing your 12 or 24-word seed. They will create fake websites, send fake emails, or pose as "Trezor Support." NO ONE from Trezor will EVER ask for your recovery seed. Never enter your seed anywhere except on the Trezor device itself during a wallet recovery.

Rule #3: Trust Your Device's Screen

Your Trezor has a "trusted display." This means what you see on its small screen is the 100% truth. Malware on your computer can change the address you see in your browser, but it *cannot* change the address on your device's screen. ALWAYS verify the recipient's address on your Trezor device screen before you confirm any transaction.

Advanced Security: Use a Passphrase

For ultimate security, enable the "Passphrase" feature in Trezor Suite. A passphrase is like a 25th word that you create. It is *not* stored on the device. When combined with your 12/24-word seed, it creates a brand new, hidden set of wallets. Even if someone steals your device *and* your recovery seed, they cannot access your passphrase-protected funds without the passphrase (which only you know).

Setup FAQ

What if my Trezor device isn't detected by Trezor Suite?

1. Ensure you are using the USB cable that came with your Trezor. Some third-party cables are for charging only and do not transfer data. 2. Try a different USB port on your computer. 3. Close all other wallet applications (like Trezor Bridge, MetaMask, etc.) as they may be conflicting with the connection. 4. Restart your computer and try again.

What happens if I lose my recovery seed?

If you lose your recovery seed *and* you still have your working, PIN-unlocked Trezor device, you are safe for now. You must immediately send all your crypto to a new, temporary, secure wallet (like another hardware wallet or a trusted exchange). Then, wipe your Trezor device, create a *new* wallet (which will generate a *new* recovery seed), back up that new seed securely, and send your funds back to your newly secured Trezor.

Why did my device come with no firmware?

This is a security feature. By shipping the device "blank," we ensure that 100% of the device's software (the firmware) is loaded from the official, secure source (Trezor Suite) by you, the end user. This prevents any possibility of supply-chain attacks where malware could be pre-installed on the device.
